The Turing Instability as an Example of Non Equilibrium Symmetry Breaking
The Turing instability has now been established as a canonical mechanism of stationary pattern formation both theoretically as well as experimentally. In this brief article the basic theory of this instability will be sketched, with special emphasis on the characteristics it has in common with symmetry breaking in equilibrium systems. A very brief introduction to some experimental and numerical...
متن کاملStrong Coupling Electroweak Symmetry Breaking
We review models of electroweak symmetry breaking due to new strong interactions at the TeV energy scale and discuss the prospects for their experimental tests. We emphasize the direct observation of the new interactions through high-energy scattering of vector bosons. We also discuss indirect probes of the new interactions and exotic particles predicted by specific theoretical models. Strong C...
متن کاملPomeranchuk instability: symmetry breaking and experimental signatures
We discuss the emergence of symmetry-breaking via the Pomeranchuk instability from interactions that respect the underlying point-group symmetry. We use a variational mean-field theory to consider a 2D continuum and a square lattice. We describe two experimental signatures: a symmetry-breaking pattern of Friedel oscillations around an impurity; and a structural transition.
متن کاملStationary structure induced along a reaction-diffusion front by a Turing symmetry breaking instability
2014 We show that, with an appropriate reactor geometry, a two dimensional reaction-diffusion Turing pattern can be restricted to a quasi one-dimensional structure along a stationary front and support our conclusions by numerical simulations. Such a geometry should free the experimentalists from contradictory requirements and should allow them to evidence genuine isothermal sustained dissipativ...
متن کاملμB-driven Electroweak Symmetry Breaking
We consider a scenario in which the dominant quartic coupling for the Higgs doublets arises from the F -term potential, rather than the conventional SU(2)L × U(1)Y D-term potential, in supersymmetric theories. The quartic coupling arises from a superpotential interaction between the two Higgs doublets and a singlet field, but unlike the case in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model ...
